With 2025 drawn to a close, thoughts naturally turn to things achieved, lessons learned, perspectives gained. And for many people, there develops a resolve to do things differently next year – whether that’s in work or in their personal or family life.

One of the clearest patterns we see in the new year is a spike in the number of people who make appointments for advice on getting their affairs in order. January, and the new page it represents, has always been a time for kick-starting new habits and getting done those things that have played on minds. Clients tell us it’s ‘good to finally get round to doing’ the forward planning they’ve been putting off.

Three of the main areas we’re expecting clients to want to talk to us about are:

  1. Inheritance tax

Recent changes, particularly relating to pensions, will be a key concern for people who want to make sure they have the most tax-efficient plans in place.

  1. Wills

People generally know that they should make a will if they want to ensure the right people benefit from the things they own (and that post-death matters are made a little easier for loved ones to work through). Despite this, the job of making a will is often sidelined.

  1. Lasting Powers of Attorney

An LPA is a legal document that appoints a person to become an ‘attorney’ in the event that the person making the LPA loses capacity. Often seen as vital in situations where someone has suffered an accident or been diagnosed with dementia, for example, an LPA enables the attorney to make decisions on their behalf. These decisions can be about the person’s health and welfare or property and financial affairs, and having an LPA in place makes the process of handing over that responsibility far simpler than it might otherwise be. Crucially, an LPA has to be made while you still have mental capacity.

Our team is made up of people who understand the barriers that have prevented people from seeking advice. We know that the thought of addressing the future can be uncomfortable. But we make this as easy as possible, advising with sensitivity and offering straightforward solutions in situations that may be troubling clients. We’re here to help you get the best plans in place, giving you peace of mind that your future, and that of your loved ones, is secure.
